    Important Update on Shipping, Tariffs and Customs

    Over the past few years, major carriers and postal services have significantly increased their base rates and surcharges, especially for cross border shipments. This is driven by higher operating costs, new customs handling fees, tariff changes and the tightening or removal of low value exemptions on imported goods.

    As a result, the very cheap and highly flexible options that used to exist for small parcels are no longer widely offered by carriers. We work hard to negotiate fair rates and to pass on the best options available at checkout, but shipping has become a larger part of the total cost of getting premium food products safely to your door.

    For orders shipped outside Canada, including to the United States:

    • Duties, taxes and brokerage or customs clearance fees may be applied by the destination country
    • These charges are set by governments and carriers, not by Ilias and Sons
    • When possible, estimated duties and taxes will be calculated and shown at checkout, otherwise they may be collected by the carrier upon delivery

    These import charges are not refundable, even if an order is returned. For approved returns, we refund the product amount according to our refund policy, but any duties, taxes or customs fees already paid remain the responsibility of the customer.

    Estimated Duties and Taxes for United States Customers

    For most shipments from Canada to the United States, United States Customs and the carrier apply duties, import taxes and brokerage fees. These amounts are usually calculated as a percentage of the order value and depend on the type of product, its country of origin and current regulations.

    Based on recent shipments, many customers see total import charges in the low to mid double digits as a percentage of their order value. In other words, duties and taxes are often in a range of roughly 10 to 25 per cent of the value of the goods in the parcel.

    To help illustrate this, here is an example.

    • Total landed cost: $110 to 125 USD

    When checkout shows an estimate of duties and taxes, it is provided for guidance only and is based on the information available at that time. Actual charges may differ slightly once the parcel is processed by customs.

    Shipping timelines begin after your order has been processed and handed off to the carrier. Expedited shipping options apply to carrier transit time only and do not prioritize order processing.

    Depending on the shipping service selected and destination, delivery can take from 1 day to more than a week after fulfilment.

    Processing times apply to business days and exclude weekends and holidays.

    You will receive an email confirmation when your order is placed, and another email with tracking information once your order ships.

    You will not be charged by us until you confirm the total cost, including shipping. Any additional duties, taxes or customs fees charged by your country are separate and outside our control.

    Delivery Times and Carrier Delays

    Estimated delivery dates shown at checkout or by the carrier are not guaranteed. Many factors can affect delivery, including:

    • Weather and natural events
    • Carrier volume and network delays
    • Customs inspections and clearance times for international shipments

    Once a parcel has been handed over to the carrier, it is in transit within their network. We cannot speed up or redirect a shipment beyond the options offered by the carrier, but we can help start an investigation or claim if your package appears delayed or missing.

    Damaged Shipments

    At Ilias and Sons, we take every precaution to ensure that your high phenolic olive oil, organic olives and balsamic glazes arrive undamaged. However, in the rare case of damaged merchandise, please contact us within 4 days of receipt at

    • Your invoice or order number
    • A clear photo of the damaged item and packaging
    • The product name

    Cold-weather thickening, freezing, cloudiness, or crystallization do not qualify as damage if the product is intact and has not leaked.

    Cold-Weather & Temperature Advisory

    Because we are based in Ottawa and ship across Canada and internationally, many orders travel through sub-zero or high-heat conditions, especially between November and March.

    For natural products such as our extra virgin olive oil and honey:

    • Olive oil may become cloudy, thick, or fully solid during transit due to cold temperatures.
    • Bottles, especially those with cork closures, may show slight expansion or a raised/loose cork when the contents freeze and expand.
    • Honey may crystallize in cooler environments.

    These changes are normal and reversible. Once stored at room temperature for over 24 hours, olive oil will return to a clear liquid state and honey will soften. These seasonal effects do not affect quality, safety, or taste and are not considered damage for the purposes of returns or refunds.

    Lost or Stolen Packages

    If a package is marked as delivered by the carrier to the address provided at checkout but cannot be located:

    • Ilias and Sons is not responsible for lost or stolen packages once delivery has been confirmed by the carrier
    • Upon request, we can confirm the delivery address, date and tracking information, and help you open a support ticket with the carrier

    If you are concerned about packages being left unattended, we recommend using a secure delivery address, for example a workplace or staffed location, or choosing a service that includes a signature on delivery where available.

    Promotional Offers

    From time to time, we may offer special discounts, sales, or promotional free shipping offers. All promotional free shipping offers apply only to orders shipped within Canada and the United States. International orders remain subject to calculated shipping charges even during promotional periods.
